The Family Bed & the problem with meaning

Elizabeth Chapin visits my studio

In my conversation with Elizabeth Chapin, we speak about coming to a new understanding of meaning, and what I’m looking for when I make or take in a work of art.

I started to really question,

why do we need to understand anything

and what does it mean to understand?

Is that really the goal?

We talk about how motherhood brought me to the figure, while layering movement & symbols brought me back towards abstraction.

And Elizabeth asked me, “What does it mean to be an artist who’s trying to dissolve her ego?” To which I had three answers, but as time goes by, I have more. Maybe someone else will ask me again some time.

There will be more of these conversations, as Interstudio grows.

I hope you’ll enjoy my talk with Elizabeth. If you missed it, you can see our conversation in her studio here.

Her studio is amazing, and the conversation even better. Watch it here.
P.S. - that family bed is still evolving…
